Diagnosis Page - Case 3

Diagnosis:

Amyloid deposition in seminal vesicle.

Microscopic description:

The core biopsy contains portion of seminal vesicle type epithelium with subepithelial depositions of eosinophilic-staining proteinaceous substance that is positive for green birefringence with polarized light by Congo red stains (see link to photomicrograph below). Focal deposition of amyloid in seminal vesicle is not uncommon and usually is not indicative of systemic amyloidosis. These amyloid deposits can produce palpable enlargement of the prostate and affect interpretation of imaging studies.
